Elon Musk, CEO of Tesla, said on Friday that the company’s much-anticipated Cybertruck will include a high-end four-motor option.

“Initial production will be a four-motor variation, with each wheel having its own independent, ultra-fast reaction torque control,” Musk said in a tweet.

Musk described the electric pickup truck as a “crazy technological bandwagon,” adding that the Cybertruck will include front and back wheel steer and could “not just turn like a tank – it can move sideways like a crab.”

The vehicle would compete against GMC’s Hummer EV, Ford’s F-150 Lightning, and Rivian’s R1T pickup trucks. Among such, the R1T is propelled by four independent engines that power all four wheels, while GMC’s Hummer is capable of driving diagonally.

Tesla’s pick-up truck, initially revealed in 2019, is built of the same stainless steel used for rockets, and Musk has boasted about obtaining several hundred thousand Cybertruck preorders when preorders began.

Musk said that he will provide an update on the company’s product plan at the company’s next earnings call. Production of the first Cybertrucks is planned to start in 2022 and reach full scale in 2023.

The firm has so far escaped a severe crisis caused by supply chain concerns and a worldwide chip scarcity, both of which have harmed traditional automakers.
